AMHERST, Mass. - The Amherst College men's soccer team topped visiting non-conference foe MIT, 2-1, on Monday. The Jeffs (3-0-1) dominated play, outshooting the Engineers (2-3), 28-5.
Amherst gained the early advantage as Taylor Downs punched a header just inside the right post off a long free kick from Ben Lavely at the 6:27 mark. Nick Lynch stretched the Jeffs lead to 2-0 just under a minute later, converting a cross from Grayson Holland. MIT answered in the 39th minute as Dylan Wright picked up a short Amherst clear and fed Walter Song on the far post for the score.
The Amherst offense peppered MIT goalkeeper Thomas Caldwell with shots throughout the game, but he managed to come up with nine saves, including a pair of key stops on blasts from Lynch and Joe Gannon. Amherst netminder Greg Lockwood collected one save in the win.
