WORCESTER, Mass. - MIT concluded its regular season schedule with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference foe Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Sunday afternoon. The Engineers now head into the NEWMAC quarterfinals with a record of 6-10-0 (0-6 NEWMAC), while WPI finishes its regular season with an overall tally of 10-4-2 (3-2-1 NEWMAC).
The match was played on Sunday afternoon after high winds and torrential rain forced the game to be postponed from its original date of Saturday.
Chris Lyons had the lone strike of the game, burying his fourth goal of the season on an assist from Brandon Finzel. The tally came in the 63rd minute while WPI was aided by a gusty wind at its back.
It wasn't a shortage of chances that led to the low score line, but rather stellar play from each sides' goalkeeper. WPI's Brian Catalano stopped a penalty kick in the 26th minute, while Tech's Tom Caldwell made a sprawling save following a corner kick on the stroke of halftime.
Catalano had three saves in earning the victory, pushing his record to an impressive 10-1-2 on the season. Caldwell made four stops in the losing effort.
Both teams will be participating in the NEWMAC quarterfinals on Wednesday, Nov. 1. No. 7 seed MIT will travel to No. 2 seed Babson, while No. 4 seed WPI hosts No. 5 seed Coast Guard. Kickoff times will be posted on the schedule when they become available.
