BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Babson College men’s soccer team defeated visiting MIT, 2-1, in a showdown of regionally-ranked New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) powers on Saturday, helping the Beavers clinch the regular season conference title and the top seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament. Babson, ranked third in New England by the NCAA, improved to 14-4-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the NEWMAC with its seventh straight victory. The Engineers, ranked fourth in the region, fell to 14-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference.

Babson took a 1-0 lead less than 20 minutes into the contest as Sean Gleason hit a long service from the right side of the field that deflected off an MIT defender. The ball then caromed directly to Chris Morris who ripped a shot from the top of the box inside the left post.

It remained a one-goal game until early in the second half, when the Beavers tacked on a key insurance goal. Max Walker received the ball at midfield, dribbled through several MIT defenders, and dished off to Billy Nickerson in the middle of the box. Nickerson then tucked a shot into the lower right corner for his ninth goal of the year at 52:53.

MIT cut its deficit in half less than four minutes later as Jason Zhu hit a hard shot into the box that was blocked by a Babson player. Christian Therkelsen then hit the rebound off the outstretched hands of diving keeper Peter Crowley and inside the right post at 56:49. The Engineers would manage just two more shots on net the rest of the way – both of which were handled by Crowley – and Therkelsen’s free kick in the final four seconds was blocked by the Babson wall as the Beavers held on for the 2-1 win.

Crowley finished with four saves in the victory for Babson while Tom Caldwell also stopped four shots for MIT.
