CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Rookie Christian Therkelsen was recognized as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Player of the Week in men's soccer on Monday, following a pair of explosive performances in the Engineers' first two games of the season. The freshman sensation burst onto the intercollegiate scene in a big way, recording four goals - including both game-winners - in Tech's two victories.
In his first ever intercollegiate game, the Nesbru, Norway native entered the match as a substitute and scored the decisive goal in the 57th minute, as MIT opened the season with a 2-0 victory over Salve Regina University. Therkelsen's heroics earned him his first ever intercollegiate start in the Engineers' next match against Rhode Island College, and the rookie didn't disappoint, bagging all three goals in the Cardinal and Gray's 3-2 win over the Anchormen.
Despite the Engineers having played fewer games than every other team in the NEWMAC, Therkelsen's four goals are currently tops in the conference.
The award was the first weekly honor of the season handed out by the NEWMAC.
