CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - At its seventh of nine consecutive home matches, the MIT squash team defeated Bryant University by a score of 6-3 on Friday evening. Tech is currently 5-4 on the season and has just one more match, to be played tomorrow morning, before taking a month and a half off from competition.
Freshman Nikhil Punwaney (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) was victorious at No. 1, winning three close, aggressive games by a score of 11-8, 11-6, 11-9. Classmate Tyler Finkelstein (Greenwich, Conn.) followed suit, winning his match in the No. 2 position, 11-6, 11-4, 11-6. Fellow freshman Thomas Cowan (Concord, Mass.) played a strong match against his opponent at No. 3, keeping the score incredibly close the entire time, but ultimately dropped all three games, 12-10, 12-10, 11-9.
At No. 4, junior David Bian (Austin, Texas) picked up an easy win with his score of 11-2, 11-5, 11-8, and junior Gray Riley (Wellesley, Mass.) defeated his opponent at No. 5, 11-7 11-4, 11-8. Senior Abhi Mitra (Medford, Mass.) played well in the No. 6 spot, holding his opponent to zero points in the second game. He won the first and third as well, 11-5, 11-4. Classmate Viveka Mishra (Washington, D.C.) picked up her first win of the season at No. 9, winning the first game, 11-9, dropping the middle two, 11-6, 11-7, and coming from behind to win the final two 11-7. 11-8.
MIT will face Bard College at home tomorrow, Dec. 7 at 10:00 a.m. The Engineers will not play another match until hosting Boston College on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
