MIT Suffers Pair Of 8-1 Setbacks Against Nationally Ranked Opponents

Jan. 30, 2006

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The squash team resumed action on Sunday in Connecticut after defeating both Fordham and Northeastern at home the day before. The Engineers failed to extend their three game winning streak, losing to both Northwestern University and Connecticut College by 8-1 scores. Coming into the match, MIT was ranked 31st in the national rankings, while Northwestern was 24th and Connecticut College was 21st. Senior captain Nadeem Mazen picked up MIT's only two victories between the two matches.

The Engineers first faced Northwestern University at 10:30 a.m. in Middletown, Connecticut. MIT split the first two matches but then lost seven straight to Northwestern in the 8-1 defeat. MIT's lone victory came at the hands of Nadeem Mazen, who also won both of his games against Fordham and Northeastern on Saturday. Mazen convincingly beat Northwestern's Peter Kam in three sets, 9-6, 9-6, 9-1.

MIT then traveled to New London, Connecticut for a 2:00 p.m. meeting with Connecticut College. The Camels took the first game, as Rob Purple defeated MIT junior Duncan Ma in four hard fought sets. The second game between MIT star Nadeem Mazen and Jordan Savaz proved to be the closest competition of the day. Mazen was edged in the first two sets 8-10 and 7-9 before storming back with three straight wins, 9-5, 9-5, 9-6. With the win, he finished the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record against tough competitors.

"Nadeem's results are remarkable," said head coach Jim Taylor. "He is playing at the number two position of the team against high level competition. This was a grueling weekend with four matches played in a 24 hour window. His opponents were fresh. Nadeem is playing the best squash of his MIT career. It is a good way to end his four varsity years."

The Engineers will look to bounce back against tenth ranked Brown University on Thursday, February 2. The match will begin at 6:00 p.m.
