CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After a weekend that saw the MIT men's swimming and diving squad rack up three victories, a pair from the team were singled out by the NEW England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference for their efforts. Sophomore Michael Liao (Newport Beach, Calif.) was named the Swimmer of the Week and sophomore Danil Tyulmankov (Stamford, Conn.) the Diver of the Week the league announced today. They are the third and fourth Engineers to be selected for NEWMA weekly honors this season.
Against Colby on Saturday, Liao was a two-event winner for MIT, capturing the 50 and 200 Breaststroke events, taking the 50 in 27.08 and the 200 in 2:08.67. On Sunday against conference opponents Springfield and Coast Guard he again dominated in the breaststroke events, picking another pair of victories. This time he won the 100 with a time of 59.12 before taking the 200 in 2:10.76.
Tyulmankov had a strong weekend off the diving board, picking up a pair of wins and two second-place finishes. His victories came on Saturday against Colby when he took both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. He narrowly missed the NCAA cut in the 1-meter event, putting up a score of 274.30. He came back on Sunday to finish second out of 12 competitors in both events.
