Engineers Claim Fifth Consecutive NEWMAC Title

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.  - The MIT men's swimming and diving team captured its fifth consecutive title at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship that wrapped up on Sunday evening. Over the three-day, six-session meet, the Engineers won 15 events, earned eight NCAA A cuts, 34 B cuts and broke seven NEWMAC records, scoring 1178 points. Springfield came in second place with 658.50 points. At the end of the meet, senior Wyatt Ubellacker (Georgetown, Ky.) was named the NEWMAC men's Swimmer of the year. Ubellacker had five wins, three of which were individual, and walked away with four new NEWMAC records.

Freshman Michael Lu (Scarsdale, N.Y.) kicked off the night with his first place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:14.40, earning an NCAA B cut. Junior Timothy Wall (Newtown, Pa.) came in fourth place with a 16:21.65 and freshman Thomas Norris (Cincinnati, Ohio) was fifth in 16:22.68.

MIT took the top five spots in the finals of the 200-yard backstroke. Senior Brendan Deveney (Newtown, Conn.) lead the way with his time of 1:48.88, smashing both the NEWMAC meet record of 1:50.28 and the NEWMAC open record of 1:49.53 from 2010 and earning an A cut. Freshman Alex Lednev (Glenmont, N.Y.) followed next with a 1:49.01, classmates Bradford Jokubaitis (Newtown, Pa.) and Sean Corcoran (Huntersville, N.C.) finished in third and fourth place with times of 1:49.59 and 1:52.39 and senior Ron Rosenberg (Newton, Mass.) was fifth in 1:52.89.

Freshmen Langston Fitts (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Kale Rogers (Newberg, Ore.) competed in the consolation heat of the 100-yard freestyle and finished in ninth and 13th place with times of 46.79 and 47.54 respectively. Ubellacker defended his title from last year, touching the wall in 44.56, breaking the NEWMAC meet record of 45.16 that had remained untouched since 2009. Classmate Tony Chen (Clemmons, N.C.) came in third with a 45.88, sophomore Austin Fathman (Hamilton, Mich.) came in fourth place in 46.02, junior Craig Cheney (Sherwood, Ore.) was sixth with a 46.38 and sophomore Brendon Chiu (Monterey Park, Calif.) was eighth with a 46.99.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, sophomore Ben Bauchwitz (Hershey, Pa.) came in second with a 2:04.27, finishing under the B cut. Junior Michael Liao (Newport Beach, Calif.) was third with a time of 2:06.96 and freshman Dion Low (Valparaiso, Ind.) came in fourth with a 2:07.38. MIT took first through third place in the 200-yard butterfly, with junior Remy Mock (Victoria, British Columbia) taking first with a 1:52.54. Freshman Luke Schlueter (St. Louis, Mo.) came in second place with a 1:53.04 and Wall was third with a 1:53.72. All three earned B cuts. Norris finished in seventh with a time of 1:56.77.

To close out the meet, the MIT A relay, that consisted of Deveney, Fathman, Cheney and Ubellacker, touched first with a time of 3:01.20, finishing well under the B cut. Springfield finished second with a 3:07.37.
