CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT's men's swimming and diving team will be sending 11 Engineers to Indianapolis, Ind. for the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships, which will take place at the IU Natatorium at IUIPUI from Wednesday, March 19 through Saturday, March 22. At last year's Championships, the Cardinal and Gray came in third place, their highest finish to date.
All five of the Engineers' relays qualified for NCAAs. The highest seeded ones are the 200-yard freestyle relay, which is fourth, and the 400-yard medley relay in fifth.
Senior Remy Mock (Victoria, British Columbia) will start the meet off on Wednesday morning with the 500-yard freestyle, where he is seeded 20th. Taking on the 200-yard IM will be sophomores Alex Lednev (Glenmont, N.Y.), who is seeded third, Luke Schlueter (St. Louis, Mo.) in 36th and Brad Jokubaitis (Newtown, Pa.) in 60th. To end the first day, junior Austin Fathman (Hamilton, Mich.) is second in the 50-yard freestyle, sitting six one-hundredths of a second behind Christian Brindamour of the Coast Guard Academy, who is the top seed.
Lednev opens the second day with the 400-yard IM with his sixth place seeding. Schlueter, classmate Sean Corcoran (Huntersville, N.C.) and Fathman will swim in the 100-yard butterfly, while Mock will race in the 200-yard freestyle. He was last year's national runner-up in the event. The following day, he and Schlueter will swim the 200-yard butterfly, being seeded 20th and third respectively.
Sophomore Bo Mattix (La Canada, Calif.) is ninth in the 100-yard backstroke, and will be joined in the event by Jokubaitis and Corcoran. Also highly seeded is senior Michael Liao (Newport Beach, Calif.), who is fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke. Juniors Ben Bauchwitz (Hershey, Pa.) and Brendon Chiu (Monterey Park, Calif.) are 31st and 32nd.
On the final day of competition, Fathman and sophomore Daryl Neubieser (Saratoga, Calif.) will swim the 100-yard freestyle, while four Engineers, all of which are sophomores, will race in the 200-yard backstroke. Jokubaitis is ninth, Lednev is 18th, Mattix is 23rd and Corcoran is seeded 30th. Liao is seeded fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke, while Bauchwitz is 26th.
MIT will kick off the four-day, eight-session meet on Wednesday with the 500 free, which is set to start at 10:00 a.m.
