CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It was a sweep of the weekly New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's tennis awards for MIT the league announced today. Senior Elia Harmatz (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) was named the Singles Player of the Week, with junior Matthew Skalak (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.) and sophomore Edwin Zhang (Falls Church, Va.) tabbed the Doubles Team of the Week.
Harmatz was strong for MIT last week, winning both of his singles matches to help MIT go 2-0 for the week. In the team's non-conference match with crosstown rival Tufts, he won a key victory at No. 2 singles, coming back from a set down to take a 6-7 (8-10), 7-5, 10-5 decision. In NEWMAC play against Springfield College he moved up to the No. 1 position and won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Playing at the No. 1 position, Skalak and Zhang won both of their matches last week to help the Engineers stretch their winning streak to five straight contests. Against Tufts they took an 8-6 decision before winning against the No. 1 team from Springfield, 8-2 to help keep MIT perfect in NEWMAC play at tied atop the league standings with the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at 3-0.
