Men’s Tennis Sweeps Weekly NEWMAC Awards

Sophomore Curtis Wu

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For a second straight week it was a sweep of the weekly New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's tennis awards for MIT. The league announced today that sophomore Curtis Wu (Yorba Linda, Calif.) was named the Singles Player of the Week, with junior Matthew Skalak (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.) and sophomore Edwin Zhang (Falls Church, Va.) tabbed the Doubles Team of the Week for a second straight time.

Wu was a key part of MIT's 2-0 record this week, helping the team improve its current winning streak to seven straight. Against Emerson College he took a 6-1, 7-5 win in the No. 3 position and then moved his NEWMAC record to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over his opponent from Wheaton College. Wu improved to 6-3 in singles play this season with the victories.

Skalak and Zhang were strong again this past week as MIT's No. 1 doubles team kept it rolling and moved their season record to 10-4 with a pair of wins. First they dispatched a team from Emerson, 8-1, before defeating Wheaton's No. 1 pair by the same score to help keep the Engineers undefeated in NEWMAC play. The wins brought their current winning to seven straight matches.
