MIT Tennis Defeats Nichols, 6-3

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Men's tennis defeated Nichols College, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon. After doubles, the Engineers were ahead 2-1 and kept getting stronger as the day went on, only losing two of the six singles matches. MIT are now 2-0 for the 2012 season, while the Bison dipped to 3-2.

In the first doubles match of the afternoon, junior Edwin Zhang (Falls Church, Va.) and senior Matthew Skalak (Croton-on-Hudson) had a tough 9-8 loss to Eduardo Irizarry and Brandon Roode. After that, however, sophomore Eugene Oh (Alparetta, Ga.) and junior Curtis Wu (Yorba Linda, Calif.) had an 8-6 win over Justin DeLuca and Isiah Prosper, and seniors Tymor Hamamasy (New York, N.Y.) and Brian Oldfield (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) defeated David Drucker and Josh Halpern with a score of 8-1.

With a 2-1 lead over Nichols, the Engineers started off singles strongly when Zhang won against Roode, 6-3, 6-3. Oh won his first set against DeLuca, 6-7(14), but lost the other two, 7-5, 10-4. Oldfield had an impressive win against Irizarry (6-3, 6-0), which was followed up with another win by Skalak over Drucker (6-4, 6-4). Hamamasy won the first set against Prosper, 4-6, but was not able to keep up for the final two (6-3, 10-7). In the final match of the day, freshman Jeffrey Bu (Arcadia, Calif.) had a 6-1, 6-0 win over Halpern.

MIT will not have any other matches until Feb. 26, when it hosts Eastern Nazarene College.
