CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The No. 20 nationally ranked MIT men's tennis team faced Salem State University at home in the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble on Thursday afternoon, winning the match, 9-0. The undefeated Engineers, who have blanked five different opponents, are now 9-0 for the season, while the Vikings fell to 0-3.
To start off doubles action like they always do, juniors Edwin Zhang (Falls Church, Va.) and Curtis Wu (Yorba Linda, Calif.) defeated Tyler Seidel and Cody Famighetti, 8-0, at No. 1. They are now 6-1 in the top spot. At No. 2, seniors Matthew Skalak (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.) and Larry Pang (Torrance, Calif.) won their match 8-1 against Joe Kim and Matt Lee and, at No. 3, freshmen Kevin Wang (Havertown, Pa.) and Jeffrey Bu (Arcadia, Calif.) defeated Kenny Hodgkins and Conner Erickson. 8-1.
Switching up the lineup for singles, Pang played in the top spot for the first time this season, easily beating Lee, 6-1, 6-0. In his second match this season and his first time at No. 2, sophomore Jeffrey Sperling (Los Angeles, Calif.) won his matches, 6-0, 6-1, against Seidel. At No. 3, senior Troy Astorino (Laguna Hills, Calif.) won his first match against Famighetti, 6-1, and was leading the second one, 3-0, before the match was retired due to injury.
Making his season debut at the No. 4 spot, junior Vlad Firoiu (Westford, Mass.) came out on top in his match against Kim, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 5, freshman Justin Cheung (Sydney, Australia) defeated Krystian Beidel, 6-0, 6-3. Cheung is now 3-0 at the fifth spot. In the last singles match, classmate Robbie Shaw (San Diego, Calif.) won his match against Kenny Hodgkins, 8-0.
MIT will next host Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, March 23 at 1:00 p.m. in the tennis bubble. This will be the Engineers' last home match this month, as they will travel to Norton, Mass. to open NEWMAC play against Wheaton College on Saturday, March 30.
