MIT Men's Tennis Opens Season at ITA Regional Championships

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Five members of the MIT men's tennis were selected to take part in the USTA/ITA Men's Tennis Regional Championships at Middlebury College over the weekend. MIT was just one of twenty New England Division III schools that traveled to Vermont for the tournament, which took place from Friday through Sunday, Sept. 28-30. After the first day of competition on Friday, only 16 of the 64 singles players and half of the 32 pairings were left in the field.

Senior Edwin Zhang (Falls Church, Va.) led the Engineers by reaching the Round of 16 in singles action, while sophomore Kevin Wang (Havertown, Pa.) and junior Eugene Oh (Alpharetta, Ga.) reached the Round of 16 in doubles.

On Friday, Wang started the day off with a win over Tufts University's Brad Wong by a score of 7-6(8), 6-2 in the Round of 64 but fell to No. 1 seed Joey Fritz of Amherst College by a score of 6-3, 6-1. No. 3 seed Zhang defeated Charles Lai of UMass Boston, 6-1, 6-0 to move onto the Round of 32, where he won against Williams' Brian Astrachan in a close match, dropping the first set by a score of 6-0 before winning the remaining two, 7-6(2), 6-4.

Oh fell to Palmer Campbell of host Middlebury, 6-2, 6-2, while lone MIT freshman Kenny Gea (Irvine, Calif.) came out on top in his match against Victor Vu of Babson by a score of 6-4, 6-3, before falling to Williams' Howie Weiss in the next round by a score of 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action, Wang and Oh moved onto the next round following their win against Tufts' Nik Telkedzhiev and Jay Glickman, 8-6, while Zhang and fellow senior Curtis Wu (Yorba Linda, Calif.) were eliminated after falling to Jose Raventos and Rohan Shastri of Williams by a score of 8-5.

On Saturday, Zhang fell to Jackson Frons of Middlebury in the Round of 16 by a score of 7-5, 6-2. In doubles play, following their win over Tufts the day before, Wang and Oh dropped their match to Williams' Matt Micheli and Conrad Harron, 8-1.

MIT will host its first match of the season on Friday, Oct. 4, facing RPI at 4:00 p.m.
