BOSTON, Mass. – MIT men's tennis was picked to repeat as conference champions in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) preseason poll that was released on Thursday afternoon. The Engineers have won the NEWMAC Tournament every year since the inception of the league in 1998. Last year's runner-up, Babson College, was picked second and Wheaton College was third. League newcomer Emerson College received one first place vote, while MIT picked up the remaining six.
Tech ended the 2012-13 season with a record of 18-3 and 5-0 in conference action. After the NEWMAC Tournament, the Cardinal and Gray were selected to take part in the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament, making their eighth consecutive and 20th overall national's appearance. After receiving a first round bye, MIT fell to Skidmore College, 5-3, ending its season ranked 29th in the nation and fifth in the Northeast region.
It was announced just days before the Engineers traveled to nationals that senior Edwin Zhang (Falls Church, Va.) was one of the individuals invited to compete in the NCAA Division III Tournament. This was the first time in his three years at MIT that he would take part in individual nationals. The last Engineer to make it to NCAAs was Tom Dohlman in 2007. He won his first match against Artsiom Prostak of NC Wesleyan in the Round of 32 before falling to Aaron Skinner of Trinity (Texas) in the Round of 16.
After last competing in October, MIT will return to the courts tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 21 for the start of the spring season when it hosts Bentley University at 4:00 p.m.
