BOSTON, Mass. – Men's tennis seniors Curtis Wu (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Edwin Zhang (Falls Church, Va.) collected two New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly awards on Monday. The pair was named Doubles Team of the Week for going undefeated in their first three matches of the spring season, while Zhang was also named Singles Player of the Week.
Tech, which was recently ranked 27th in the country in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll of the season, returned to the courts at the end of last month and currently holds a record of 3-0 for the spring semester. Overall, the Engineers are 4-1, after defeating RIT and falling to Amherst back in October. In the past two weeks, MIT has blanked Bentley University (2/21), UMass-Boston (2/28) and Colby-Sawyer College (3/6) and, during all three of these matches, Zhang and Wu have played at No. 1, walking away from each one with a win.
In singles action this spring, Zhang is 3-0, with all of his matches being played in the top spot. Against Colby-Sawyer this past Friday, he easily defeated his opponent by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Overall, the senior has a record of 3-2 after dropping three-set thrillers to both RPI and Amherst in the fall.
MIT will be on the road for the next two matches and will not play at home again until the beginning of next month. The Engineers will first play Bates College at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 14, before facing Springfield College at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29.
