BOSTON, Mass. (April 18) – For the first time in his collegiate career, MIT men's tennis freshman Victor Cheng (Santa Monica, Calif.) has been named as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Singles Player of the Week.
Cheng went 3-0 this week in singles play, which included a 2-0 mark in NEWMAC contests and a victory at No. 3 singles over Jayson Fung of No. 13 Amherst College. Cheng, who won all three matches in straight sets, in an unbeaten 10-0 this spring in singles play. He started his week by beating Alden Zeff of Wheaton 6-0, 6-1 and then against No. 13 Amherst was only one of two MIT student-athletes to win his singles match as he defeated Jayson Fung 6-1, 6-4. Cheng closed his week with a 6-1, 7-5 win over John Hu of Coast Guard to help the Engineers improve to 12-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference matches.
No. 22 MIT (12-2, 4-0 NEWMAC) hosts No. 34 Brandeis this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in a non-conference match inside the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble.
