MIT Posts Strong Outing at ITA New England Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Seeded No. 7, Thomas Dohlman and Eric Beren upset the No. 1 seed en route to a semifinal finish at the ITA New England Championship held this past weekend. The duo notched the Cardinal and Gray's highest placement since an All-MIT final in 2002. Individually, Dohlman advanced to the Round of 16 as the No. 8 seed. Mark Egan and Peden Nichols also represented the Engineers at the tournament.

Dohlman and Beren opened play with an 8-6 win over Brian Danishevsky and Brad Dressler (Wheaton College). Tech's pair ousted another NEWMAC opponent as it defeated Andrew Constant and Joe Lisi (Springfield College), 8-3. Dohlman and Beren continued to roll with an 8-4 decision over the No. 1 seeded Brian Marsden and Brett Ramsay (Trinity College). Unfortunately, their run came to an end in the semifinals when they fell to No. 5 Conrad Olson and Filip Marinkovic (Middlebury College), 8-2.

Egan and Nichols posted an opening round victory of 8-6 versus Adam Nielson and Max Berger (Bates) before falling to the No. 8 pair from Williams College by the same margin.

In the singles bracket, Dohlman led off with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Paul Gerdes (Wesleyan University). He then outlasted Brad Dressler (Wheaton), 2-6, 7-5, 12-9, before losing to No. 9 Ted Haley (Williams College), 0-6, 6-3, 6-3. Egan defeated Tallen Todorovich (Wesleyan), 6-2, 6-2, in the first round but then fell to Rick Devlin (Williams), 6-1, 6-0, in his next match. Beren met the same fate as he recorded an opening round victory of 6-1, 6-1 against Vinh Tran (Tufts University) but then lost to Gary Simonette (Williams), 6-2, 6-2. Nichols was defeated by Constant, 6-4, 2-6, 10-8, in the championship draw and then fell to Karol Furmagan (Williams), 6-3, 6-4, in the consolation bracket.
