CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT seniors Jamie Simmons (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Chinedum Umachi (Detroit, Mich.) were honored on Monday by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) for their stellar performances at this past weekend's Westmont Collegiate Classic. Simmons was named the Women's Track Athlete of the Week while Umachi was tabbed with Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors.
Simmons had a busy afternoon as fourth-ranked MIT won the team title with 84.67 points. The senior was a winner in the 400m with a time of 57.56 seconds and ran a leg of the victorious 4x100 relay (48.32). Simmons also came back to take fifth in the 400 hurdles in 65.05. Simmons' time in the 400 currently ranks 9th in Division III and her time in the 400 IH is 16th-best.
On the men's side, Umachi was the high-point scorer for MIT. Umachi won the hammer throw (166-07 feet) and the discus (137-03 feet) and placed fourth in the shot put (44-0.50 feet) for a total of 17 points. Tech took first overall by just 0.50 points over host Westmont College.
Both the men's and women's squads will be back in action Saturday at the Engineer's Cup, hosted by RPI.
