Hannon and Simmons Named NEWMAC Track Athletes of the Week

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A pair of MIT track and field student-athletes were honored Monday as the Athlete of the Week by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Senior Jamie Simmons (Carlsbad, Calif.) was named the NEWMAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week while junior Kyle Hannon (Park Ridge, Ill.) garnered similar recognition on the men's side.

Hannon had a personal best in the 1500m at the Larry Ellis Invitational over the weekend. The senior finished in 3:50.73, the fifth-best time in MIT history and the sixth-fastest in the country in 2012. Simmons won the 400-meter hurdles at Saturday's MIT Spring Invitational with a time of 1:01.89, the third-fastest time in Division III in 2012.

It was the second Athlete of the Week accolade or Simmons, who was previously recognized on April 2. Teammate Portia Jones (Queens, N.Y.) was honored by the conference a week ago. Hannon is the third Tech harrier to be tabbed as NEWMAC Track Athlete of the Week, joining senior Daniel Harper (Naperville, Ill.) and sophomore Tyler Singer-Clark (Falmouth, Mass.). Senior Chinedum Umachi (Detroit, Mich.) was named the NEWMAC Field Athlete of the Week on April 2.

Both squads will be defending their NEWMAC titles at the conference championship meet next weekend. The men are looking to win their 12th straight crown while the women hope to make it four in a row.
