Four Engineers Compete in First Day of ECACs
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The MIT men's track and field team opened competition at the ECAC Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Springfield College on Thursday afternoon. A small number of Engineers were sent to the two day meet in hopes of improving on their performances in time for the upcoming NCAA Championships. MIT wrapped up the first day four-way tied for 20th with five points.
Seniors Cyrus Vafadari (Columbus, Ga.) and Yida Gao (Marietta, Ga.) hit the field first in the Pole Vault. Vafadari finished in sixth place with a vault of 15-03.50, improving slightly on his performance at the New England Division III Championships that were held earlier this month. Gao came in 12th with his vault of 14-09.50.
In the triple jump, freshman Carrington Motley (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Arinze Okeke (Hawthorne, Calif.) performed well, coming in seventh and 21st in finals. Motley had a jump of 47-00.75, bettering his performance of 45-10.00 at last weekend's New England Outdoor Championships. Okeke's 43-09.25 was right by his jump from the last meet.
Day two of ECACs will begin tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. with the remaining events of the Decathlon. The other field events will start soon after.
