CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Stephen Morton has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week after leading MIT to a first place finish in its season opening meet versus Bates and Colby over the weekend. Morton’s performance was so outstanding that he received the conference’s top honor in both disciplines as the awards are typically given to two different athletes.
The junior earned 28 of the Engineers’ 204 total points on Saturday while picking up four individual event wins. On the track, Morton won the 55 meter dash in 6.63 seconds and claimed the top spot in the 200 meters with a time of 23.04. Morton helped MIT solidify its first place standing in the field events, out-jumping his counterparts in both the long jump and the triple jump. An All-American in the event last season, he won the long jump with a distance of 6.78 meters. He also reached 14.47m in the triple jump, nearly a full meter ahead of his closest competitor.
MIT will be back in action this weekend at the Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University on Saturday, January 24.
