Stephen Morton Sweeps ECAC Weekly Track & Field Honors
Feb. 12, 2009
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second time in four weeks, Stephen Morton has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week. After helping MIT to a first-place finish in its first home meet of the season against Williams and Coast Guard, Morton received the conference’s top honor in both disciplines as the awards are typically given to two different athletes.
In winning the 55-meter dash, Morton just missed out on his personal-best, set last weekend at Bowdoin, with a time of 6.54 seconds. He then raced to a comfortable win at 200 meters, finishing in 22.63, more than a second faster than the runner-up. Morton was also outstanding in the long and triple jumps. A week after fouling out in the long jump, Morton found his home surface much more comfortable, clearing 23-3 ¼ feet, by far his best jump of the season. He was equally impressive in the triple jump, missing his own Institute record by just one inch (47-10). Both efforts hit Provisional NCAA Qualifying standards.
The Engineers will host a Coed Invitational next weekend while also taking part in the Valentine’s Meet at Boston University.
