No. 5 MIT Defeats Mount Ida and No. 6 NYU in Men's Volleyball Tri-Match
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The nationally-ranked No. 5 MIT men's volleyball team swept Mount Ida College and then outlasted No. 6 NYU in a five-set thriller to improve to 15-4 on the year following Saturday's tri-match. The victory over NYU was the first for the Engineers since 1991 and it snapped the Violets' 11-match winning streak. Earlier in the day, NYU defeated Mount Ida in three sets.
No. 5 MIT vs. Mount Ida College, 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-15)
Freshman Chris Omahan (Mount Vernon, Ohio) led MIT's attack with 11 kills to go along with five digs. Sophomore Paul Syta (Fairport, N.Y.) compiled 33 assists, five digs, four kills, three aces, and two blocks as freshman Tyler Nolan (Sayville, N.Y.) registered seven kills, two blocks, and two aces. Freshman Brad Gross (Centreville, Va.) contributed nine kills, followed by five from freshman Andrew Busse (Mount Prospect, Ill.) and four from senior Benson George (East Meadow, N.Y.). Freshman Isaac Margulies (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) powered the defense with 14 digs.
Junior Spencer Hastings (Orlando, Fla.) led Mount Ida with seven kills and two solo blocks while senior Franklin McCaffrey (East Greenwich, R.I.) totaled six assists and three kills. Junior Ricky Oliveira (New Bedford, Mass.) generated seven assists and seven digs as sophomore Nick Schibi (Torrington, Conn.) paced the Mustangs with eight digs.
No. 6 NYU def. Mount Ida College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-8)
Freshman Arya Amirhekmat (Dana Point, Calif.) paced NYU with 11 kills as sophomore Parker Kolodka (Verona, N.J.) posted seven kills, six digs, and two aces. Sophomore Nick Capriccio (Huntington Beach, Calif.) notched nine aces, six kills, and two blocks while junior George Koch (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) totaled five kills, three aces, and three blocks. Freshman Matthew McDonald (Lake Forest, Calif.) chipped in six digs and two blocks as junior Karl Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.) and sophomore Dan Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) shared setting duties, dishing out 17 and seven assists, respectively.
Hasting tallied six kills, four digs, two solo blocks, and an ace as McCaffrey contributed six assists, four digs, and two kills to Mount Ida's cause.
No. 5 MIT def. No. 6 NYU, 3-2 (24-26, 26-24, 20-25, 25-23, 15-10)
Junior Matt Hohenberger (St. Louis, Mo.) amassed 20 kills, four blocks, and an ace as sophomore Ken Siebert (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded 18 kills, eight digs, and two blocks for MIT. Junior Patrick Vatterott (St. Louis, Mo.) totaled 10 kills and eight blocks while freshman Alex Klein (San Diego, Calif.) added eight kills. Syta finished with 47 assists, 11 digs, four blocks, and three aces as senior David Thomas (Carlsbad, Calif.) bolstered the front with four blocks. Seniors Jeremy Velazquez (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Daniel Sngiem (Long Beach, Calif.) both collected nine digs.
Junior Taylor Fauntleroy (Santa Barbara, Calif.) powered NYU with 18 kills as sophomore Connor Mortland (San Diego, Calif.) dished out 47 assists.
All three teams return to action next week. NYU (12-3) takes the court first on Wednesday, March 7 at No. 2 Springfield College. The following day, Mount Ida (1-12) travels to Daniel Webster College. MIT heads to St. Louis, Mo. for the Fontbonne University Invitational on March 9-10.
