BROOKLINE, Mass. – In a tri-match hosted by Newbury College, the No. 7 MIT men's volleyball team defeated the Nighthawks, 22-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-16, and Emmanuel College, 22-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-23, on Saturday afternoon. With the wins, the Engineers improved to 19-6 on the season.
In the opener with Newbury, senior David Thomas (Carlsbad, Calif.) led the way with 15 kills, a .565 hitting percentage, five digs, and three aces. Sophomore Ken Siebert (St. Louis, Mo.) totaled 11 kills, a .348 hitting performance, six digs, and two blocks as freshman Alex Klein (San Diego, Calif.) posted 10 kills and two blocks. Junior Matt Hohenberger (St. Louis, Mo.) generated nine kills, a .533 hitting percentage, three blocks, and two aces while classmate Patrick Vatterott (St. Louis, Mo.) tacked on five kills, three blocks, and an ace. Sophomore Evan Wang (Saratoga, Calif.) dished out 37 assists as senior Jeremy Velazquez (Chelmsford, Mass.) compiled seven assists, five digs, and two aces.
Against Emmanuel, Siebert racked up 13 kills, 13 digs, four blocks, and two aces while Thomas notched 11 kills, a .423 hitting percentage, three blocks, and two aces. Klein registered seven kills on nine errorless hitting attempts to go along with four blocks as Hohenberger added nine kills and two blocks. Graduate-student Malcolm Bean (Rochester, N.Y.) had five kills and two blocks while Vatterott bolstered the front row with three blocks. Wang recorded 35 assists and five digs as Velazquez contributed seven assists. Senior Daniel Sngiem (Long Beach, Calif.) powered the defense with 10 digs.
Next up for MIT will be the Endicott College Invitational on March 24-25. The Engineers will square off with New Jersey City University, No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology, SUNY IT, and No. 11 Vassar College.
