MIT Competes at Hawks Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT men’s volleyball team began its 2009 campaign at the Hawks Invitational hosted by SUNY New Paltz this past weekend. The Engineers dropped a pair of tough five-set losses to Sacred Heart University (24-30, 24-30, 40-27, 40-25, 15-10) and New Paltz (30-27, 30-27, 27-30, 28-30, 15-12) before sweeping Elms College (30-23, 30-28, 30-28). Michael Demyttenaere was tabbed to the All-Tournament Team while Garrett Winther earned Honorable Mention accolades.
Winther nearly notched a triple-double against Sacred Heart as he amassed 19 assists, 13 digs, nine kills, and seven blocks. Demyttenaere tallied 17 kills, a .481 hitting percentage, 10 blocks, and three aces while Eric Reuland posted 24 digs and eight kills. David Thomas notched 10 kills, followed by nine from Randolph Li. Tim Lee and Philip Rogoz joined Winther in setting duties, dishing out 16 and seven assists, respectively. Eugene Jang collected 13 digs; Jeremy Velazquez totaled seven digs while Scott Pollom picked up four blocks.
Once again, Winther had a solid outing, tallying 14 digs, 10 assists, nine kills, a .348 hitting percentage, and five blocks versus New Paltz. Demyttenaere registered 19 kills, a .375 hitting performance, four blocks, and two aces while Thomas recorded 19 kills and four blocks. Reuland notched 15 kills and 15 digs as Jang had a team-high 17 digs. Pollom posted nine kills while Velazquez added 15 digs. Lee distributed 43 assists as Rogoz added eight.
In MIT’s win over Elms, Pollom recorded 12 kills, a .528 hitting percentage and six blocks. Demyttenaere paced the Engineers with 14 kills to go along with a .522 hitting performance. Winther amassed eight blocks and seven digs while Reuland contributed eight kills. Jang led the way with 10 digs as Velazquez collected seven. Lee finished with 29 assists and two aces.
