CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT’s Scott Pollom surpassed the 1,000-kill mark while teammate Michael Demyttenaere set the new Institute standard for aces in a season en route to victories over Mount Ida College and Southern Vermont College on Saturday. The Engineers (12-9, 6-3 NECVA) defeated Mount Ida, 30-20, 30-6, 30-18, in a non-conference match-up before topping NECVA New England Division foe Southern Vermont, 30-7, 30-7, 30-5. Earlier, Mount Ida swept Southern Vermont, 30-15, 30-12, 30-14.
MIT def. Mount Ida College, 3-0 (30-20, 30-6, 30-18)
Michael Demyttenaere notched 10 kills and a .368 hitting performance. Demyttenaere also tacked on five aces, which raised his season total to 50 and surpassed the previous MIT record of 48 established by Praveen Pamdimidukkala last year. Garrett Winther paced MIT with 14 kills on 17 errorless-swings for a .824 hitting percentage in addition to two blocks as Scott Pollom registered eight kills and a .636 hitting percentage. Eric Reuland totaled seven kills, a .385 hitting percentage, seven digs, and two blocks while Benson George posted three blocks and three aces. Eugene Jang collected eight digs as Jeremy Velazquez recorded four digs. Tim Lee finished with 38 assists and a team-high nine digs.
Bryan McMenamin totaled nine digs, six kills, and a block for Mount Ida (4-7). Thomas Belton compiled six kills, four digs, and two blocks as McCoy Arnoux picked up six kills and an ace. Gary Alvarez dished out 19 assists for the Mustangs.
Mount Ida College def. Southern Vermont College, 3-0 (30-15, 30-12, 30-14)
Sean Moore registered six kills and two blocks as Aaron Eschler tallied seven kills and five digs. Ricky Harrington added 11 assists for Southern Vermont (0-9, 0-8 NECVA).
MIT def. Southern Vermont College, 3-0 (30-7, 30-7, 30-5)
Scott Pollom totaled 13 kills, a .667 hitting percentage, three blocks, and three aces as Troy Tamas posted nine digs, six aces, and five kills. Eric Reuland notched six aces, six digs, and four kills while Michael Demyttenaere and Benson George each recorded four kills. Eugene Jang registered six digs as Tim Lee distributed 29 assists.
Sean Moore paced Southern Vermont with two kills.
Next up for MIT will be a road match at Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Southern Vermont will host Daniel Webster College and D’Youville College on Sunday, Feb. 22 while Mount Ida College returns home with a conference match against Johnson & Wales University the next day.
