CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Using tie-breaking procedures to determine the champion of the Fifth Annual MIT Men's Volleyball Invitational, Emmanuel College edged out the host Engineers for the crown on Sunday. Both squads posted unblemished marks throughout the weekend, but using total point differential to resolve the deadlock, the Saints notched 16 more points to collect their first title since 2006.
MIT defeated Bard College (30-16, 30-18, 30-27), the College of Mount Saint Vincent (30-25, 30-21, 30-17), Hilbert College (30-9, 30-17, 30-21), and Lasell College (30-22, 30-27, 30-19) en route to its fifth straight 20-win season. Michael Demyttenaere and Tim Lee represented the Cardinal and Gray (21-10) on the All-Tournament Team.
In their opener with Bard, the Engineers amassed a team hitting percentage of .340 to go along with a balanced attack. Demyttenaere led the way with 13 kills, a .667 hitting performance, and five blocks. Scott Pollom and Garrett Winther each notched seven kills as Eric Reuland and Randolph Li followed with six kills apiece. Eugene Jang collected 13 digs while Reuland posted seven digs. Lee and Caine Jette shared setting responsibilities, as both dished out 18 assists.
MIT recorded a team hitting effort of .324 against Mount Saint Vincent in Saturday's nightcap. Demyttenaere posted a team-high eight kills and five blocks as Pollom registered six kills and five blocks. Winther and David Thomas both tallied seven kills while Winther added four blocks. Reuland totaled five kills and four blocks while Troy Tamas finished with five kills. Jang notched 10 digs as Lee compiled 27 assists, five kills, five digs, and two aces.
Tamas paced the Engineers with 11 kills and four aces in addition to six digs versus Hilbert. Thomas tacked on 10 kills as Reuland posted six kills in one game. Lee tallied 10 assists and three aces in one set while Jette closed out the match with 29 assists, seven digs, and three aces. Demyttenaere recorded four kills, three blocks, and two aces as Pollom notched four kills, two blocks, and two aces. Li picked up five kills and two blocks while Benson George bolstered the front row with a pair of blocks. Jang anchored the defense with 12 digs as MIT registered a team hitting percentage of .354.
Winther posted a team-high 12 kills and 10 digs to go along with three aces against Lasell. Demyttenaere contributed 11 kills and five aces as Reuland totaled 10 kills. Pollom recorded nine kills and five blocks while Thomas added two blocks. Jeremy Velazquez notched six digs and two aces as Jang collected eight digs. Lee finished with 42 assists and nine digs.
