QUEENS, N.Y. - The MIT water polo team earned its first Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Northern Division win of the 2009 campaign with a 14-13 defeat of Queens College Saturday. Devin Lewis led the way for the Engineers, who rebounded from a last-second loss at home to Brown on Thursday to improve to 3-11 overall and 1-2 in CWPA play.
After heading to halftime deadlocked at seven, the Cardinal and Grey took control of the contest in the decisive third period, outscoring the Knights, 5-3, in the frame and eventually held on for the victory. Lewis scored five of his team-high 26 goals to pace the offensive attack. Mark Artz added three scores in man-up situations while John Preis found the back of the net three times also.
Columbus Leonard made 16 saves and had three more steals to earn his third win of the season in net.
Tech will now be off for two weeks before welcoming Iona College to the Zesiger Pool on Saturday, October 10. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
