CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following an outstanding debut performance at this weekend's MIT Invitational, Craig Cheney and Columbus Leonard were honored by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA). Cheney was named the Northern Division Rookie of the Week while Leonard earned Divisional Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Cheney tallied eight goals and two assists to go along with five steals, as the Engineers went 1-1 to open the 2010 campaign. Leonard totaled 23 saves in the two games.
Both players were instrumental in helping Tech take nationally-ranked St. Francis to overtime in the season opener. Cheney scored five times, including a key overtime marker to extend the contest into sudden death, where the Cardinal and Gray ultimately fell, 12-11. Cheney added a pair of assists and had three field blocks against the Terriers. He also chipped in three scores and four steals to lead MIT to its first win of the season, downing Cal Lutheran, 9-5, later that day.
Leonard made 13 saves and added an assist against St. Francis. The junior goalie made several key stops at the end of regulation and in overtime to extend the contest. He then picked up his first win of the season against Cal Lutheran, holding the Kingsmen to just five goals while making 10 saves.
The Engineers will be back in the pool next Friday, September 17, as they travel to Harvard University for the ECAC Championship. Tech will take on the host Crimson in an opening round match at 4:30 p.m.
