CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT water polo team will open the season as the fifth-ranked team in Division III following the release of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) preseason polls. The Engineers finished fifth in the same poll at the end of 2010 and sit behind fellow CWPA member Johns Hopkins, whom the Cardinal and Gray defeated in the final of the Division III Eastern championship a year ago.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, who MIT will face during a west-coast swing on September 18, was the top squad in the initial Division III rankings, followed by University of Redlands in second, third-ranked Johns Hopkins University and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at No. 4.
In the CWPA league poll, Tech stands seventh overall and third among Northern Division squads. St. Francis College tops the early season league poll and division-rival, Brown, sits fourth.
The Cardinal and Gray open the season on September 3 with the four-team MIT Invitational in the Zesiger Pool. Tech will square off against Harvard, Brown and Cal Baptist during the one-day event.
