CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT senior goalkeeper Columbus Leonard (Mill Valley, Calif.) and sophomore Craig Cheney (Sherwood, Ore.) were tabbed to the All-Northern Division first team by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) at the league's annual awards ceremony on Friday night. Leonard was tabbed to the all-league team for the third year in a row while Cheney picks up his second selection, after earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2010.
The first team accolades cap a tremendous career in Cambridge for Leonard, who will graduate as MIT's all-time leader in saves. Leonard finished his senior campaign with 203 saves, his third season of at least 200 stops in net. Leonard was an honorable mention All-American a year ago.
Cheney led the Engineers with 50 goals and was solid on the defensive end as well, with team-high marks in steals (52) and ejections drawn (59). The sophomore scored 10 goals in three CWPA Northern championship games, as the Cardinal and Gray finished in fifth place at the tournament.
