Freshmen Lead Engineers in First Half of Labor Day Invite
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In the opening tournament of the 2012 season, the MIT water polo team defeated Yale (23-7) and Harvard (19-7) but was unable to hold off Diablo Valley (13-7), who won the final game of the Labor Day Invite, hosted by MIT on Saturday.
The Engineers were led by freshmen Kale Rogers (Newberg, Ore.) and Ory Tasman (Orlando, Fla.) and senior goalie Kevin Hsiue (Alamo, Calif.). Over the course of the three games, Rogers and Tasman both totaled 11 goals while Hsiue compiled 27 saves.
Against Yale, Rogers racked up four goals to go along with two assists, as Tasman tacked on three goals and two steals. Sophomores Dylan Hallman (La Jolla, Calif.) and Kyle Bowman (Millbrae, Calif.) and freshmen Brady Knight (Fremont, Calif.), Zach Nelson (La Jolla, Calif.) and Joe Kusters (Coronado, Calif.) each scored twice. Junior Scott Stephens (Los Altos, Calif.) dished out a team-high three assists, while Knight added two of his own. Hsiue collected six saves in addition to two assists.
In the game against Harvard, Tasman amassed seven goals and two assists, while Rogers tallied three goals to go along with two steals. Junior Craig Cheney (Sherwood, Ore.) totaled three goals and two steals, as Stephens registered three steals and Hsiue recorded 10 saves.
In the finale with Diablo Valley, Cheney contributed three goals, followed by two from Rogers and one from Tasman. Hsiue and sophomore Spencer Boone (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) shared goaltending duties, totaling 11 and two saves respectively.
The Engineers will travel to Brown on Sunday, Sept. 2 to conclude the Labor Day Invite.
