Day One of Water Polo Div. III Eastern Championships
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT water polo opened the first day of the Division III Eastern Championships with wins against Washington & Jefferson (19-10) and Connecticut College (15-9). They will continue the tournament tomorrow with a game against Johns Hopkins at 11:30 a.m. to battle for first place.
The game started off strongly when junior Andrew Dorne (Irvine, Calif.) scored a goal just 20 seconds into the first period. This was followed soon after by a goal by fellow junior Craig Cheney (Sherwood, Ore.) and two by freshman Kale Rogers (Newberg, Ore.). MIT played the strongest in the second and third periods of the game, scoring 13 goals, compared to six from Washington & Jefferson. Rogers, junior Scott Stephens (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomores Jack Clark (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and Kyle Bowman (Millbrae, Calif.) all scored two goals. Dorne, junior Michael Farid (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) and freshmen Ory Tasman (Orlando, Fla.), Matthew Orton (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) and Samuel Philips Edson (Seal Beach, Calif.) each scored one goal. Rogers and Orton wrapped up the final period with one more goal each.
In the MIT vs. Connecticut College game, Tasman scored an impressive six goals. Cheney scored three, Stephens and Rogers scored two and Clark and sophomore Dylan Hallman (La Jolla, Calif.) scored one each to help the Engineers defeat the Camels, 15-9.
