NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Senior Jake Llyod (Sinking Spring, Pa.) netted a game-high six goals, including a hat trick in the first quarter as Iona College defeated No. 4 MIT on Sunday morning in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Northern Division play. With the setback, the Cardinal and Gray fall to 12-14 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
Iona jumped out to a 3-1 lead before junior Kale Rogers (Newberg, Ore.) brought the Engineers within one with 4:35 remaining in the first quarter. Llyod answered for the Gaels, netting his second goal of the contest that sparked a 5-2 run, spanning the first and second quarters, which provided the hosts with an 8-4 lead at the break.
Lloyd and junior Zach Presto (Pittsburgh, Pa.) extended Iona's lead to 10-4 midway through the third, but Tech countered with back-to-back goals from sophomore Kelly McGee (Pasadena, Calif.) and junior Matthew Orton (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) at 4:44 and 4:16. Iona halted Tech's comeback with two more tallies from senior Kyle Elmore (Murrieta, Calif.) and Llyod to secure a 12-6 advantage after three quarters.
MIT outscored Iona during the final eight minutes, 3-2, but were unable to stop the Gaels offense, which netted their final two goals early in the fourth quarter. McGee, sophomore Zach Churukian (Menlo Park, Calif.) and junior Ory Tasman (Orland, Fla.) each notched one goal during the final five minutes.
Tech, which concluded their regular season slate today, will return to action next Saturday, November 8 and Sunday, November 9 when they compete in the Northern Division Championships on campus.
