Water Polo Reigns in More End-of-Season Awards

Nov. 15, 2006

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announced its All-Division honorees this past weekend, and MIT garnered three spots in the Northern Division ranks. Head coach Felix Mercado earned the CWPA Northern Division Coach of the Year crown, while senior Kevin Amendt and sophomore Mike Smith Bronstein were named to the All-Division Second Team.

Mercado, who was named CWPA Division III Coach of the Year less than a month ago, led the Engineers to an overall record of 11-20 in his second year at the helm. Under Mercado's guidance, Tech landed a spot in the Eastern Championship for just the third time in program history.

Amendt not only anchored the Cardinal and Gray's defense over the course of the campaign, but also pitched in on the offensive end with 22 goals. Smith Bronstein notched 40 goals - good for second on the team - despite missing time with an injury.

MIT's water polo team has had at least one member of its ranks honored by the CWPA Northern Division each year since 2003.
