MIT Finishes 11th in Directors’ Cup Rankings
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Coming on the heels of one of the most successful campaigns in Institute history, MIT placed 11th among all Division III schools in the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) annual Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This was the highest ranking for the Engineers in the 14-year history of the program and the first time they were the best performers in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

MIT Cross Country Squads Honored for Academic Achievement
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following a season full of notable athletic success, both the MIT men’s cross country team, who captured its 12th consecutive conference title in the fall, and the women’s squad, which finished a program-best fifth at the NCAA Division III Championship, were honored for their accomplishments in the classroom last week. The teams each received the All-Academic Award from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), given to teams with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.10 that compiled a team score at the NCAA Regional Championship. In addition to the team awards, seven individual student-athletes garnered accolades from the USTFCCCA, including five by the women’s squad, matching the second highest total by any team in the nation.

Engineers Finish Sixth at New England Regional Championship
CUMBERLAND, Maine – The MIT men’s cross country team took sixth place at the NCAA Division III New England Championship, hosted by the University of Southern Maine on Saturday. New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Runner of the Year, Hemagiri Arumugam, was the top overall finisher for the Cardinal and Grey, who matched the program’s best finish at the meet since 2003, with 163 total points.

NEWMAC Announces Academic All-Conference Teams
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference recently announced the 2009 NEWMAC Fall Academic All-Conference Team. Thirty-five MIT athletes were recognized by the conference for their performance in the classroom.

Men’s Cross Country Wins 12th Straight NEWMAC Title
BOSTON, Mass. – Just as it has done every year since the conference began, the MIT men’s cross country team captured the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Saturday at Franklin Park. On the strength of eight All-Conference performances, the Engineers were able to extend their streak of league titles to 12. Hemagiri Arumugam was named the NEWMAC Runner of the Year as the top overall finisher.

Paul Welle Picks up Conference Weekly Honors
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Paul Welle was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week on Monday after leading MIT to a convincing win at the Saints Invitational on Friday. Welle was the first of seven MIT runners in the top nine on a soggy and windy course at Franklin Park.

Men’s Cross Displays Depth at Saints Invitational
BOSTON, Mass. – With seven of the top nine finishers, the MIT men’s cross country team easily captured the team title at the Saints Invitational hosted by Emmanuel College. Five consecutive Tech runners crossed the finish line just behind the top overall finisher in cold and rainy conditions at Franklin Park on Friday afternoon.

Arumugam Named NEWMAC Runner of the Week

Kyle Hannon Earns NEWMAC Accolades
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Kyle Hannon was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week on Monday, after an impressive performance at the Keene State Invitational. Hannon is the third-straight honoree for MIT, joining teammate Hemagiri Arumugam, who received the award each of the past two weeks.

Arumugam Earns Second Straight NEWMAC Weekly Honor

Three Engineers were among the top 23 finishers as Tech’s team score of 96 points was tops among all Division III squads.

MIT Captures Engineer’s Cup
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Hemagiri Arumugam paced the MIT men’s cross country team to victory in the annual Engineer’s Cup competition on Saturday afternoon. Tech had five runners among the top 10 finishers, totaling 25 points to beat out RPI (39) and WPI (65). The win was MIT’s 18th straight in the annual series among the three schools.
