Tech Places Sixth at Regional Championship

BRUNSWICK, Main – Daniel Harper (Naperville, Ill.) finished 12th overall as the MIT men's cross country team posted a score of 195 to earn sixth place at the New England Division III championship on Saturday. The Engineers had six runners among the top 90 positions at the regional meet.

Harper navigated the eight-kilometer course in 25:07.82, to earn a top-12 finish at the meet for the second consecutive season. The senior was 11th a year ago. Stephen Serene (Washington, D.C.) was also among the top 15, with his time of 25:09.32. Roy Wedge's (Lawrence, Kan.) time of 25:27.09 was good for 32nd overall.

Benjamin Mattocks (Sharon, Mass.) earned a 66th-place result in 26:10.11 and Allen Leung (Arcadia, Calif.) was Tech's top first year finisher, in 70th place (26:14.89).

Williams College captured the team crown with 88 points, just one better than runner-up Middlebury College. Michael Schmidt of Middlebury was the top individual finisher.

Harper will hope his performance is good enough to earn a spot in next weekend's NCAA Division III championship. Selections to the national meet will be announced on Monday.
