NEW ORLEANS, La. – In the first week of regular-season polls released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Wednesday afternoon, the MIT men's cross country team appeared 28th on the list and sixth in the regional rankings. The Engineers slipped just one place from their preseason ranking that was announced at the end of last month.
MIT started the 2012 season ranked 35th in the nation, but have been ranked as high as fifth in past years. The Cardinal and Gray captured their 15th consecutive New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) title in October of last year and ended their season at the New England Division III Regional Championships, where they finished in ninth place.
On Aug. 31, Tech hosted the annual Alumni Meet, but will officially open the season at the University of Southern Maine Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 12:00 p.m. The next USTFCCCA regional rankings will be released on Tuesday, Sept. 24, with the national rankings following the next day.
