MIT Crushes Regional Trio In Second Straight Win
Sept. 17, 2006
CUMBERLAND, Maine - Sophomore Jake Ruzevick crossed the finish line first for the second consecutive week in leading MIT to the team title at the Bates College Cross Country Invitational. Ruzevick split 26:57 in outdistancing a field that included Keene State, Southern Maine and the host Bobcats.
Ruzevick's win was the second in as many weeks and follows his selection as NEWMAC Runner of the Week. While all three teams facing the Engineers showcased strength at the top of their lineups, including Keene State's second-place finisher, Kevin Kelleher, the Cardinal and Gray countered with a deep attack that included four of the top 10 finishers.
Kevin Brulois was nipped at the line by Southern Maine's Nick Wheeler, although the Tech senior still managed fifth with a time of 27:27. Rookie Johannes Schneider moved up in the team rankings, finishing as MIT's third man after closing seventh overall in 27:34. Trevor Rundell followed in eighth, while freshman Brandon Pung completed the scoring for the Engineers after crossing the line in 11th place.
MIT scored 32 points to easily win the meet. The exciting battle was for the runner-up spot, which Southern Maine grabbed with a team score of 65. Bates finished just one point back, while Keene State took a surprising fourth-place finish with 69 points. The Engineers top seven finished ahead of every other team's No. 4 runner in the 8k circuit, while MIT boasted half of the field's first 28 finishers.
