Mount Holyoke Rallies Past MIT, 44-39

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A 28-6 run during the final 12 minutes of the second half helped propel visiting Mount Holyoke College to a 44-39 victory over MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Saturday afternoon. Angelica Pascual led all scorers with 17 points as Mount Holyoke improved to 7-15 on the year and 5-11 in conference play. Tamara Pena paced the Engineers (8-14, 4-12 NEWMAC) with 15 points to go along with five rebounds and four steals.

MIT opened the contest with six straight points, which was matched by Mount Holyoke. After trading baskets, a layup by Pascual put the Lyons in front, 10-8, at the 9:11 mark. The Engineers countered with a 12-2 spurt during the next five minutes to regain the lead. A basket by Pascual with 1:17 left in the half trimmed the hosts' advantage to 20-14, which would hold through the intermission.

The Cardinal and Gray kicked off the second stanza with a 13-2 run, resulting in its largest margin of the day (33-16) with 13:01 left to play. Exactly a minute and a half later, Christine Chancy's three-pointer sparked Mount Holyoke's comeback as back-to-back treys from Pascual put the Lyons ahead, 40-39, with two minutes remaining.

The Engineers had several chances to even the score or go ahead down the stretch, but their attempts were just off the mark. Mount Holyoke sealed the win on Emile Methot's four free throws during the last nine seconds of play.

Rachel Hunt racked up eight points, eight rebounds, and six blocks for MIT as Stephanie Cooke totaled six boards and three assists. Anna Merrifield grabbed seven caroms while Lauren Sascha Burton chipped in five.

Chancy tallied a game-high nine rebounds, eight points, and two steals as Methot finished with six points, four assists, and two steals. Jennine Vizcaino and Pascual both hauled in seven rebounds as Vizcaino snagged four steals.

Both squads continue conference play at home on Wednesday, Feb. 16. MIT will host WPI while Mount Holyoke will take on the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
