MIT Ranks Seventh on WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll

Atlanta, Ga. (July 19) – Behind the strength of a 3.618 grade point average, the MIT women's basketball team placed seventh on the 2016-17 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll. This was the second time the Engineers cracked the top 10 on the list as they ranked third in 2011.

The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III; NAIA and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2016-17 season is the 22nd in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.

The Engineers paced the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with a program-record seven Academic All-Conference selections as Liana Ilutzi '17 (East Hanover, N.J.), seniors Cathryn Hart (Charlestown, Mass.) and Lindsay Westlake (Brookline, Mass.), and juniors Sophie Gershon (New York, N.Y.), Kara Holinski (Livonia, Mich.), Kristen Ngan (Sudbury, Mass.), and Dolly Yuan (San Jose, Calif.) each maintained at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. In addition, Holinski was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America third team, resulting in the 10th award for the women's basketball program.

MIT finished the 2016-17 campaign with a record of 20-6, setting the Institute record for winning percentage (.769). This marked the second 20-win season in program history and the first since the 1998-99 campaign.

"The WBCA family is committed to the student-athlete experience and celebrates these teams that have demonstrated excellence in the classroom," said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. "This year's WBCA Academic Top 25 is a powerful list of teams and their head coaches who have winning cultures that prepare their student-athletes for success in life."
