CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's basketball team elevated its ledger to 7-7 following a 56-33 victory over Eastern Nazarene College on Monday night. Samia Mahjub paced the Engineers with 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor to go along with seven rebounds. Clara Yuan and Sally Simpson each grabbed five steals while Yuan chipped in 10 points. Kelsey Cappelle tallied five rebounds and two blocks as Kimberly Soo Hoo dished out nine assists.
MIT opened the game with eight straight points, six of which came courtesy of lay-ups by Mahjub. The Crusaders countered with nine unanswered points to take their first lead. After trading baskets, Mahjub registered six consecutive points to put the Engineers ahead for good (16-11) at the 7:59 mark. Eastern Nazarene stayed within striking distance for most of the frame, trailing by one (18-17) with 4:12 to go. MIT closed the period with a 9-3 spurt that was capped by a Cheryl Kwinn lay-up right before the buzzer.
The Engineers carried the momentum into the second stanza as they rattled of 14 consecutive points to build a 41-20 advantage after 6:30 had elapsed. MIT's margin never fell below 15 as it cruised to the win. The Cardinal and Gray recorded a 30-16 advantage in points scored in the paint and also picked up 21 points off of Eastern Nazarene turnovers.
