Feb. 1, 2005
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - Babson College proved to be too much to handle for MIT, as the Beavers posted a 72-49 win over the Engineers in NEWMAC action on Tuesday night. Babson's Caitlin Boulier led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 6-of-10 from the floor including nailing 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Karen Kinnaman paced MIT with 16 points and three steals.
Suzy Ward put the Beavers (11-8, 7-1 NEWMAC) on the scoreboard first with a bucket in the paint. Christa Margossian knotted the game with a pair of free throws. A basket by Kinnaman put the Engineers (3-13, 0-8 NEWMAC) ahead at 17:39. Almost 30 seconds later, Boulier drained a three-pointer, giving Babson the lead for good. The Beavers went on to outscore MIT, 34-10, resulting in a 39-14 advantage at halftime.
The Engineers opened the second stanza with a 9-3 run during the first six minutes. A pair of free throws and a trey from Ward ended the scoring spree. MIT would not give up as it bounced back from its first-half shooting woes by nailing 11-of-22 (.500) from the floor and 11-of-18 (.611) from the charity stripe. As a result, the Engineers outscored Babson, 35-33, in the second frame.
Suzy Ward and Caitlin Fenn both posted 11 points while Fenn totaled three steals. Meredith Hellen dished out a game-high six assists and collected four steals. Val Alexander notched eight points and five rebounds coming off the bench.
The next game for MIT will be on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 7:00 p.m. when it travels to Tufts University.
