CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The MIT women's basketball team closed the 2004-05 season with 62-32 loss to NEWMAC foe Wheaton College on Saturday. Karen Kinnaman paced the Engineers (4-19, 0-13) with nine points and seven rebounds. Vanessa Savas totaled 12 points and 11 boards coming off the bench for the Lyons (11-14, 6-7).
A free throw by Wheaton's Samara Audet one minute into the contest would hold for the next four minutes until she set up Courtney Riley for the game's first field goal. On the ensuing possession, Jasmin Moghbeli closed the gap by sinking a pair of free throws. Savas posted back-to-back baskets before Christa Margossian made Tech's first shot from the floor at 12:02. A free throw by Lisa Gibson was countered with a basket by Cherelle Walls, cutting the Lyon's advantage to two (8-6). The Lyons responded by going on a 21-7 run, resulting in a 29-13 lead at the intermission.
Audet opened the scoring in the second frame by nailing a three-pointer on a feed from Riley. Mary Flaherty boosted Wheaton's lead to 21 (34-13) at 18:33. MIT was able to narrow the deficit to 19 on several occasions, but the Lyon's thwarted any scoring attempts.
Courtney Riley registered 12 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks for Wheaton. Kate Williams recorded 11 points while Samara Audet finished with 10 points and seven caroms. Kim McCormack snagged a game-high four steals.
