CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's basketball team closed its regular season with a 58-44 loss at WPI on Saturday. The Engineers' season will continue on Wednesday, Feb. 27 when they take on top-seeded Wheaton College in the quarterfinal round of the NEWMAC Championship Tournament. The appearance will be the first for the No. 8 Cardinal and Gray since the 2002-03 season when it defeated Wheaton (69-59) in the first round before falling to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (65-57) in the semifinals.
The early stages of the game were closely played as a three-pointer by Alice Yeh brought MIT (12-13, 4-9 NEWMAC) within two (7-5) at the 14:59 mark. Strong defense by WPI helped it generate a 22-6 run that resulted in a 29-13 advantage at the break.
The hosts maintained a comfortable margin for most of the second stanza. The Engineers battled back and cut their deficit to nine on three occasions, the last being at 49-40 with 6:31 left to play. WPI ended any hopes of a late rally from MIT as it scored nine of the last 13 points to close the game.
Clara Yuan paced the Engineers with 16 points while Cheryl Kwinn registered her third double-double in five games behind a game-high 12 rebounds and 10 points. Samia Mahjub bolstered the offense with eight points.
