CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Top-seeded Wheaton College was too much to handle as the hosts upended No. 8 MIT, 79-36, in the quarterfinal round of the NEWMAC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament on Wednesday. The Engineers wrapped up their campaign with a 12-14 record and registered their first 10-win season since 2002-03, which was also the last time the program reached post-season play.
The Lyons scored 11 unanswered points through the first 4:30, holding MIT without a field goal until the 15:11 mark. The Engineers narrowed the gap to seven on two occasions, the last coming on a steal and lay-up by Clara Yuan with 9:14 on the clock. Wheaton responded with a 20-5 run that resulted in a 38-16 advantage at the break.
The Lyons maintained control in the second stanza while MIT's shooting woes continued. Samia Mahjub finished with 12 points and nine rebounds as Yuan notched seven points. Kimberly Soo Hoo tallied six points and three assists while Cheryl Kwinn pulled down six boards.
