CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT women’s basketball team fell to non-conference foe Mount Ida College, 59-45, on Tuesday night. Clara Yuan paced the Engineers (1-2) with 14 points and three steals as Kristen Whaley totaled 11 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Cheryl Kwinn added nine points while Amy Marshall collected five boards.
The early stages of the first half were a defensive battle, with Mount Ida establishing a 12-7 lead at the 8:15 mark. During the next five minutes the Cardinal and Gray mounted an 11-2 run that resulted in an 18-14 edge. Yuan contributed five points to the spurt while Jamie Simmons and Alice Yeh hit shots from behind the arc. The Mustangs cut their deficit in half with a layup at the buzzer.
Mount Ida eventually reclaimed the lead courtesy of a 10-2 spurt (26-20) to start the second stanza. MIT knotted the contest twice before going up 37-36 on Whaley’s jumper at the 7:15 mark. The Mustangs countered with a 22-9 run to close the game, limiting the Engineers to one field goal, a three-pointer by Whaley, down the stretch.
