CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - MIT fell to the University of New England, 53-36, in the championship game of the 2004 MIT Women's Basketball Tip Off Classic. In the consolation game, Cazenovia College defeated Mount Ida College, 77-63. Earning All-Tournament Team honors was Christa Margossian (MIT), Tiffany Trent (Cazenovia), Jen Seymour (Cazenovia), Maggie Bramswig (Mount Ida), and Kate Bailey (UNE). Essie McKinnon of the University of New England was selected as the Tournament MVP.
Essie McKinnon opened the championship game by connecting on a feed from Sheena Weston. On the following play, Christa Margossian scored on a put-back before McKinnon gave her squad the lead for good after 2:33 had expired. The Nor'easters (2-0) went on to take a 29-17 advantage at halftime. UNE continued to dominate in the second frame, extending its lead to as many as 21 points on two occasions.
Essie McKinnon totaled a game-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor, and contributed a team-high six caroms and three steals. Kate Bailey finished with nine points while Ashley McDonald dished out five assists.
In the consolation game, Mount Ida led for a majority of the first half until a basket by Cazenovia's Tiffany Trent at 2:49 gave her squad its first lead since its opening basket. The Wildcats (1-1) went on to take a 40-36 advantage at the intermission.
A pair of free throws by the Mustangs' (0-2) Melissa Simbliaris plus a fast-break lay-up by Sarah Tuff and a jumper by Kristin Santos tied the game (40-40) 3:48 into the second stanza. A basket by Jen Seymour on the next possession gave Cazenovia the lead for good.
Kristin Santos paced Mount Ida's attack with 16 points, including shooting 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Sarah Tuff and Maggie Bramswig each totaled 14 points, with Bramswig hitting 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. Tuff collected seven rebounds while Bramswig finished with a game-high of nine. Melissa Simbliaris contributed 11 points by shooting a perfect 8-of-8 from the line. Bobbie Jo Taft registered four assists and eight rebounds before fouling out.
For Cazenovia, Tiffany Trent finished with 29 points, 12 assists, eight rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. Jen Seymour tallied 15 points by hitting 7-of-9 from the floor. Ferrin Caldwell posted 10 points and eight rebounds coming off the bench.
