CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Behind a 32-15 advantage in points off turnovers, the MIT women’s basketball team defeated Albertus Magnus College, 64-60, on Thursday. Clara Yuan registered a game-high 22 points for the Engineers (2-4), who forced 29 turnovers by the Falcons. Albertus Magnus (5-3) saw four players reach double-digits in scoring, with Bianca Brown leading the way with 12 points.

MIT opened the game with 10 straight points, later holding a 14-4 advantage with 12:27 on the clock. Sparked by a three-pointer by Liz Williams, the Falcons responded with a 24-6 run for a 28-20 lead. Collette DuBose racked up 10 points during the 10-minute spurt. Back-to-back three-pointers from Yuan and Jamie Simmons coupled with a layup by Yuan at the buzzer evened the contest at 28.

The Engineers carried the momentum into the second half, outscoring the Falcons, 18-8, to establish a 46-36 margin midway through the frame. Albertus Magnus countered with a seven-minute 20-9 run, capturing a 56-55 edge on a Nikki McClease layup at the 2:16 mark. Just over a minute later, MIT converted a Falcon turnover into a trey by Alice Yeh to regain the lead. A steal by Simmons near midcourt resulted in a layup for Yuan, pushing the hosts’ advantage to 60-56 with 42 seconds remaining.

Following its own timeout, Albertus Magnus cut its deficit in half on a jumper by Brown. The Cardinal and Gray gained some breathing room with a free throw by Yeh and a clutch offensive rebound by Cheryl Kwinn later resulted in Simmons hitting the front-end of her free throw attempts. The Falcons continued to attack, with McClease draining a basket with two seconds remaining. A foul with one-tenth of a second left to play put Simmons back at the charity stripe, where she sank both of her shots to seal the game.

Simmons finished with 15 points, five assists, and five steals while Kwinn contributed 11 points, a team-high nine rebounds, and three assists for MIT. Yeh notched nine points as Kristen Whaley collected six boards.

In addition to her team-high scoring effort, Brown grabbed seven rebounds. McClease posted 11 caroms and 10 points while Krystal Bryant bolstered the rebounding corps with 11 of her own. DuBose tallied 10 points, three assists, two blocks, and two steals as Katelyn White added 10 points. Gia Paturzo dished out four assists for the Falcons.

Both squads will continue play at home on Saturday, Dec. 6. MIT will host Bay Path College while Albertus Magnus will take on Wellesley College.
